I am very rarely bugged by bugs. In general they tend to leave me alone, however about once a year I attract the attention of one fly. No matter what I do, that fly will not leave me alone. It will bite me multiple times, wherever it can and I literally have to leave the area to not get attack unless we somehow manage to kill it. Last year this happened in the middle of kayaking and I could not kill it and neither could Kevin. He was a massive inch long beast and bit me multiple times, taking chunks of flesh with him. It chased me all the way back to the car and I am pretty sure died slamming itself into the window. This year it happened again but at Devils Tower.
I think out of all the places we stopped this trip, this was my favorite. The picture angle for our selfie is terrible. It was scorching hot and busy. But it was beautiful. We took a good two hours just to walk around the rock and talk. We didn’t talk about anything important, it was refreshing to just be in nature, not in a rush or worrying about what was going to happen next. That is until the fly found me, he got me three times before Kevin saw him on my shoulder and decided to get him. And he did, with the loudest smack ever. It felt like it echoed through the mountains. The people behind us reacted and I was totally shocked because I wasn’t expecting it and it hurt! However it hurt less than the bites and finally the beast was gone. I was left to wander the beautiful area in reflective peace and a massive hand print on my shoulder.
Our trip to Devils Tower was definitely memorable and not just because of it’s beauty.
Have you been to Devils Tower? Or would you go? Also, do bugs ever bother you?
