The Search for Understanding - Week 2
Did you know that there are two Creation Accounts within the Genesis?? What purpose does having two different versions of the story serve?? Other than to show that the author doesn’t actually know what he’s talking about and is making it up as he goes. He created one story and than embellished it as the years went by. ;)
In this version humans are created before plants - actually man is created first, then animals, then woman. Genesis 2:7, 18-22.
In Genesis 1:26 we have a verse giving man dominion, that many use as justification for mistreatment of other species and the environment. However we have Genesis 2:15 saying that God “put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and keep it”
The trees are called The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil - Genesis 2.9 and yet God doesn’t want man to eat from the Tree of Knowledge Genesis 2:17. I thought God was giving man free will, which would mean he would know right from wrong, so why would he not be allowed to eat from the tree. Unless free will hasn’t been created yet. Also when Adam does eat from the tree, he doesn’t die, he lives for hundreds of years! So did God lie about the purpose of the tree so man would not have free will?
The idea of Adam naming all species is just laughable Genesis 2:19. We still don’t have names for all the creatures out there and we have creatures that Adam definitely didn’t have when he was alive. I can’t think of any at this moment. But I do have this list of 10 Recently Extinct Animals, these are species that I will never see in my lifetime. Sure Adam lived for hundreds of year but he still would not have been around long enough to see every kind out there.
Genesis 2:21 if God took a rib from Adam why do men and women have the same number of ribs? Also why did he have to take a rib to create woman when he didn’t have to do that to the male animals? Though that is an assumption, maybe he did do the same to the male animals but the author wasn’t inclined to share that information. Something that Skeptics Annotated notes is that God only creates one woman to be Adam’s help-meet, so the question that begs the question - how does God feel about polygamy.
Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Not that this has happened yet, but what is it about God walking through the garden that makes than suddenly feel ashamed?
Thanks for reading! See you next week!
