Thought Provoking Exercise

In the middle of chapter 3 of the Artists Way is this exercise and before finishing the chapter or reading through the questions I just decided to do it immediately and record my instant reactions. Some of my answers were very surprising others not so much. But I enjoyed it so much I thought I would share it and my answers with you here. Hope you enjoy

  1. My favorite childhood toy was…

Darlene a beautiful doll I was gifted as a baby. I don’t actually remember playing with her ever. Though he hair was so badly messed up that I do know we had to careful wash, comb, and then braid the matte.

  2. my favorite childhood game was…

Grounders because we got to play with other kids.

  3. The best movie I ever saw as a kid was…

I didn’t originally answer this right away because I had to text a friend and ask her a few questions about it. The movie in particular was Shrek 2, it’s not a particular great movie. But the memory of it sticks out in my mind, mostly because things were done that I wasn’t allowed to do. I was given permission to go the movies and out of all the ones being played this was the only one I was allowed to see. My friend had a truck and she drove us to Lethbridge, where we met up with two boys. I didn’t know either boy but I do remember my friend being very excited and I was too. Meeting up with the boys was the “sneaky” part of the weekend, my parents didn’t know and it was my little rebellion. We watched the movie, stayed off way to late, I am assuming we went out to eat, but I have no memory of it. We then stayed at my friends Grandma’s house arriving very, very late that night (aka early in the morning the next day). On the drive home, we got the truck stuck and had to call her Dad to help us out (he literally just backed it up… I have no idea how we were actually stuck, it was weird and I remember we were rather embarrassed by this). But the best part was that I was late for church, I hadn’t wanted to go anyways. The worst part was that my friend had to call my parents and apologize for dropping me off late. It was a great night and the funniest memory when it comes to thinking about movies I saw as a kid.

  4. I don’t do it much but I enjoy…

    Baking.

  5. If I could lighten up a little, I’d met myself…

    Dance, sing, be loud!

  6. If it weren’t too late, I’d…

  7. My favorite musical instrument is…

The piano. I would love to get one and work through my feelings about playing it.

  8. The amount of money I spend on treating myself to entertainment is…

This is such an interesting question. Entertainment I take to mean movies, theater, TV, etc. So we spend like maybe $50-$60 a month on such things. However if you count aerial as entertainment, that’s a whole other level.

  9. If I weren’t so stringy with my artist, I’d buy her…

A proper second monitor and that piano I mentioned on question 7.

  10. Taking time out for myself…

is an important priority and a necessity.

  11. I am afraid if I start dreaming…

I’ll build myself an impossible home that we could never reasonably be able to afford.

  12. I secretly enjoy reading…

  13. If I had had a perfect childhood I’d have grown up to be…

There is some irony that the first thing that popped into my head was wife, mother, picket fence, in Airdrie. Honestly if we hadn’t moved to the farm and life hadn’t changed so drastically I could totally see myself being a working mom with the 2.5 kids. Similar to many of my friends. This is a super weird thought for me, because being a parent or having kids is so not something I ever want or ever will do.

  14. If if didn’t sound so crazy, I’d write or make a…

Book. I’d write a book. But I don’t think that sounds crazy. It just sounds hard.

  15. My parents think artists are…

lowly beings not to be paid attention to. A passing thing but not life’s priority.

  16. My self thinks artists are…

Something to be cherished and nurtured. That it is sad that we don’t encourage artistry in children. Reality is a beautiful thing but both are possible.

  17. What makes me feel weird about this recovery is…

I feel like I should be doing more. Working a job, or further ahead than I am. This question brings out all my doubts and insecurities.

  18. Learning to trust myself is probably…

The hardest thing and to be honest I don’t know if I do. I trust very few people. But I’ve never really turned the question on myself. I think I tend to trust myself explicitly in certain things, like what I want out of life, but in other things I have so many doubts. This is an ongoing learning thing for me in all regards.

  19. My most cheer-me-up music is…

A variety of things. Current favorite songs are Wake Up, Open The Door, And Escape to the Sea by Blaqk Audio, Rocketship by Shiny Toy Guns, and Endlessly, She Said by AFI.

  20. My favorite way to dress is…

    All in black!

You’ll notice that I did not answer all the questions, 6, 12. It’s because I am not sure how to answer them. I don’t think it’s too late for me to do things and I don’t secretly read things either. So they feel silly to try to answer. However originally I didn’t have answers to 14 and 18, with time though I was able to think through and find what I actually thought, which is what you get here.
