Winter Haven by Athol Dickson

The religion in this book is confusing. It’s like she isn't going to believe, she’s going to come to the conclusion that it’s all bullshit. AND then she doesn't, which was disappointing. BUT I am getting ahead of myself.

Vera lives in a world of numbers. She has a set path and she does not stray. Until she gets a phone call about her missing brother Ziggy. Vera is tossed out of her comfort zone and into the world of strangers stuck on a foggy island. I never felt a connection with Vera. I understood her religious upbringing but I never would have gone the path she choose. Vera was not a strong character; she readily allowed others to find the answers for her. Something I have never really been okay with. That makes it hard to symphonize with someone that would probably annoy me in real life.

That said I enjoyed the story because it was suspense without ghosts or magic or supernatural beings. It was regular old humans trying to make a livelihood for themselves.
