Cover Thoughts: simple like the main character.
I enjoyed this book very much. Lydia was an interesting character. She only cared about others. I think if she wasn’t in a serving role from the time she was born though she would have turned into a massive brat! She very much took on the feelings of others and carried a heavy burden because of it. I guessed the big twisted almost from the beginning. It started with little things like Cleopatra hating her and Samuel dying. But I enjoyed watching Lydia come to the same conclusions I had.
Simon was annoying. One moment he is a sweetheart the next he’s a jackass. Part of it is the fact that he is a teenage boy and part is the fact that he is being twisted in to two different directions. I also understand that this is a normal behaviour. But seriously what a way to plan with a girls heart! I am not sure how I feel about that ending.
Mariamme was… different, most of the time I felt sorry for her. Tossed into such a horrendous situation. She deals with it well for the most part. Except when it comes to Lydia’s secret, the big reveal. She should have known exactly how that would turn out based on her own experiences and she have found a different way to handle it.
Salome, is someone I wanted to know more about. Mostly why did she do what she did. How did she become what she became.
Cleopatra, oh my dear Cleo. I have idolised her for a very long time based on one little book I read a long time ago. (which I will have to read again seeing as I own it!) But this story totally portrays her as evil. And when I think about it, there isn’t much good that Cleopatra did, at least according to this book. It was very interesting reading about Cleopatra in a different light.
Great Book! Nice to read something not part of a series again!
