Self Portrait Project 2017

A Little History

A long time ago, a blogger I followed hosted a weekly self portrait challenge. I decided to join in and, over time, found my confidence increasing with each image. Call it vanity if you like, but the portraits I have taken over the years have really helped me grow as a person in mind, body, and spirit. She no longer blogs, but I have decided to continue using images to help me grow.

2010 is the year I really began taking self-portraits. I used it as a way to record my outfits and didn't get out of my apartment hallway often. It taught me about lighting, crazy backgrounds, and how to dress for myself. I don't have any self-portraits from before that time. But the ones I do have from 2010-on, I treasure.

The portraits have definitely grow to be more than a collection of my outfits, they've become a way of expressing what I'm feeling. These thoughts are deeply personal and since 2016 I have been actively trying to be more creative in how I take a photo. I want the photos to be a deeper reflection of the words I write beside them.

2017 the year of moving past, the past. It was a year of learning to stand up and be who I'd discovered I was. Take responsibility for my actions but hold myself to a higher standard. Become a kinder, happier, healthier person.

As you click through the images below, I hope you enjoy the reflections of my emotions.

Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life.
